Someone spread the rumor that I was a drug dealer because of all the people at my house. The ‘people’ were actually just my mom and sister dropping off/picking up my nephew while I was babysitting him. No one else, lol.

Someone spread the rumor that I didn’t like going out because I’m fat. 😐 Meanwhile, I’m just introverted and enjoy my peace and alone time. But if you think I need to lose weight, just say that, sis. 🥲

Someone spread a rumor that I was dead.
A buddy of mine changed high schools and, I guess, thought it’d be easier to win sympathy by going for the ‘I’m grieving’ angle. He told people I died in a car crash on a notoriously steep curve near my house (I didn’t even have my learner’s permit at the time). Apparently, he took time off to ‘attend my funeral,’ gave a eulogy, and even claimed he’d been comforting my family.
Imagine the surprise when a friend of a friend from that school met me months later at a party and told me all this. They were LIVID, but I was more amused. I’d see him around afterward, but I never questioned or confronted him about it. He got enough crap when word spread that I was, in fact, alive.

Someone spread the rumor that I was a celebrity. At first, it felt cool, but then they kept insisting they’d seen me in something. It actually happened a couple of times. There was one person who wouldn’t stop guessing movies I’d been in. I was like, ‘I feel like I’d remember that part of my life,’ but they didn’t let up. Finally, I just said, ‘You guessed it!’ and moved on with my day.

Someone spread the rumor that I’m a Thai trans woman. I’m a white woman, but hey, I’ll take the compliment—they’re so beautiful.
The second rumor was that I was a trans woman. This was back when a lot of people, including young left-leaning folks, were openly very transphobic. I was at uni, and it was awful. It really made me hate people for a while…
It was also pretty insulting to trans women. At the time, I was pretty awkward, couldn’t do my makeup, and didn’t dress well. But the rumor got so widespread that it actually worked in my favor—kept the awful people away from me.

Someone spread the rumor that I’m a satanist.
This happened after I had eye surgery and ended up with a bloodshot eye that was literally dripping blood. People saw that and, well… let’s just say, their imagination ran wild.

Someone spread the rumor that I was having an affair with the preacher. The reasons for this were equally insane. For example, he put his hand on my shoulder to get my attention (oh, the scandal), I met the delivery truck at his house while he was preaching because a fridge was being delivered in the middle of his work, and my absolute favorite—apparently, I pulled weeds in his yard while he was OUT OF TOWN visiting his son who was dying in the hospital. 🤦🏽♀️

There’s a sizable group of adults who believe I summon demons and can convince them to haunt their lives… What I find even more disturbing is that this rumor started with one grown woman, who I really hope the majority of society just ignores and writes off as a mentally unwell compulsive liar.

My bio mum tried starting a rumor at her church that I had run away and was having an affair with a much older married man who supposedly wouldn’t let me talk to her because he was emotionally manipulating me when I was a teen.
The truth? I was in foster care because she was physically abusive. The ‘older man’ she was talking about was my foster dad, who, along with his wife (my foster mum), loved me unconditionally and eventually adopted me after several years.
But of course, that version of events wouldn’t have gone over so well with her Bible study group…
